Soundings is a collection of original poems about the process of exploring our interior and exterior worlds. The term "sounding" comes from the nautical practice of using a rope to measure depth. The rope is marked at intervals with distinct objects, and at the terminus, a "lead" to weight it. The objects selected as fathom markers vary in terms of material pattern, form or shape of the object, and number of elements. Even in the pitch-dark, the line can be cast in, and the distance to the bottom gauged. Without it, ships risk destruction when navigating unknown waters. Each section---Pattern, Form and Number---is a measure of how we can imagine together in the perspective of the poem. Some poems are taken directly from the news. Others are based on things remembered, dreamed or imagined. The line has been thrown out day and night, winter and summer.
