Freudian hallucinations spur Eddie Masterson to leave his parents' funeral home and enroll at Muddleburg Kollege. Moments after Eddie gains acceptance, Muddleburg's premier history scholar drops dead; Eddie generously offers to bury Professor Lewis. The next day, Eddie ogles Vanessa Barbarerro at the funeral, then embarks for Muddleburg with high hopes, unaware that Lewis has stowed away in his hearse. Eddie arrives and is immediately confronted by Millicent Twittle, an eccentric librarian who claims that Fate himself told her that Lewis is alive--and nearby. Lewis promptly steals Millicent's Fate Formulizer; Eddie subdues Lewis, but not before the Formulizer is hidden--and found by Vanessa, who accidentally causes Fate to materialize in the form of a troll. While Fate continually pesters the freshman, Eddie falls in love with Vanessa; but only when he realizes that Fate must be confronted and conquered does the young hero discover his true identity.
