Memphis Girl and Other Stories is a collection of six contemporary coming of age stories that take place in the heart of Memphis and the Mississippi Delta. Nineteen year-old Mary is a "Memphis Girl" who looks for love in all the wrong places, including the Catfish Cabin where she works as a waitress. There, she meets Sean, and together they embark on a journey of their troubled pasts. Fourteen year-old Libby discovers she might "like-like" Wendy in "Best Friends" and struggles with her new and unfamiliar sexual feelings after they share a kiss. Twenty-something Katie is "Busted Flat in Helena", and all hell breaks loose with the church ladies she encounters at the Star Lite Restaurant. Meanwhile, Katie's older sister in "Betsy Ann's Freedom" finds out her boyfriend is gay, after she's had a mole on her face removed for him, and gets a little crazy. Mary returns as "A Daughter" and tries to resolve her relationship with her mother on a car trip with her aunt and mother to Texas. Unlike Mary, Libby, Katie, and Betsy Ann, five year-old Molly in "Learning to Count" has to come of age early because of irresponsible parents she can't count on.
