"Allegro" and other stories

Allegro and Other Stories forms a neighborhood of unlikely characters existing in different time periods and in different places. In two of the stories set in the early 1950's, a Ukrainian emigre child in Cleveland forms her own American dreams. A young woman travels to Slovakia where she unearths the past of her grandmother and great-aunt who were separated during World War II. A widower in Washington, D.C., finds himself charting a new life which is strangely divergent from his life during marriage. And, in Hoboken, New Jersey, an older bachelor with a pathetic love life thinks he has found a soulmate in his nephew. What joins these characters here is that they all face the challenge of discovering who they are or who they could become.
