This collection of short stories seeks to show the beauty and heartbreak in both the contemporary and historical landscapes of life. In "Like A Brick," a young girl tries to overcome her awkwardness at a basketball game and learns that winning can be as painful as losing. A young woman in "A Brief Sketch Of The Hills" comes to understand her brother's suicide by looking into the past in both human and geological terms. In the late 1890s, the guests staying at a spa in "Ashland Hot Springs" witness a supernatural occurrence which changes their lives. In "El Dorado," a man's quest for silver leads him high into the Rockies, where he realizes that nothing is what it seems.
