When the Wheel Comes Off is a collection of short stories that explores the themes of intimacy in the relationships between lovers, spouses and friends. "So Turn Golden Rings" delves into the psyche of unfaithful husband when he is disturbed in the night by a noise downstairs. He finds himself wandering the house and his mind together. The title story takes place at an amusement park and deals with two friends, one now a third wheel. In "Sunday's Revelations" a young girl encounters her first brush with adult sexuality and the irrationality of the emotions of intimacy. These situations bring the tensions of relationships into focus and allows each story to explore how intimacy is gained and lost. The constant flux of intimacy is revealed as people grow away from each other or reconnect after time apart both physically and emotionally. Men and women are always adapting.
