There's an old Cadillac on my street that doesn't have a bumper on the front or the back. One window is cardboard and duct tape. The right front quarter panel is crumpled, half the paint on the car is gray primer, and there's a bullet hole in the driver's door. I'm sure the insurance company considers it totalled, but somehow it fires up every morning and gets where it needs to go. Like this Cadillac, people tend to pick up dents and dings in the course of their lives. Some make it through and keep on going, but others end up totalled. The five stories in this collection examine the damage life arbitrarily inflicts on individuals.
