Volume and composition of individual's saving in the United States

The purpose of this study is to analyze the available data on individuals' saving in order to determine the trends in saving, the reasons for these trends and their economic implications. The study will start with a discussion of concepts, defining saving and indicating various theories as to its role in the economy. It will then proceed to discuss the measurement of saving, appraising the reliability and limitations of the different series published in this field and attempting for the first time a conceptual reconciliation of the most important of these series.
