Understanding recidivism among juvenile offenders: Perspectives of "experts" in Polk County, Iowa
This paper investigates the "experts" perspectives on the effects juvenile programming and rehabilitation has on recidivism for juvenile offenders in Polk County, in the state of Iowa. Although there is existing research on the causes of recidivism for juvenile offenders in heavily populated cities and states, there is minimal research on recidivism factors for juvenile offenders in rural areas; and there is also a small amount of research using qualitative methods from the viewpoint of the staff that work directly with juvenile offenders. Through nine qualitative interviews of three juvenile corrections rehabilitative programs, this researcher presents information on the "experts" perspectives on how juvenile programming influences juvenile recidivism, and examines how the programs themselves might influence juvenile recidivism. The information from this research will be useful for the staff that works directly with juveniles and policy makers. KEY WORDS: Juvenile offenders; Recidivism; "Experts" Perspectives on Recidivism.
