In the poem "From a Journal of the Year of the Ox," by Charles Wright, he asks: "What makes us leave what we love best? ... /That sends us into uncertainty for its own sake." This question is one that is paramount in Travelling lncognito. Separation--physical, mental, and emotional--from the familiar ground of home, family and memory, is explored in these poems, along with the attendant questions--who, where, what, why, when, and how? Perhaps the only answer that is honest is "uncertainty for its own sake." Our attempts to reinvent ourselves are great. The success of that reinvention, as opposed to any answers to it, is perhaps only achieved through the act of writing.
