Archibald MacLeish once observed that the pursuit of poetry begins with the assumption that there is indeed some "fabulous creature" called poetry to be found. If there is any purpose crouching behind the poems that appear in this thesis, it is simply this: the pursuit of the "fabulous creature." There is no conscious meditation on a unifying theme, symbol or idea in these poems, no verbal improvising over recurring rhythms, no repetition of a riff--just lines of carefully chosen words hunting down poetry.
