Solid phase sorbents samplers were used to determine time integrated concentrations of PAHs for streams in urban and suburban areas of Washington D.C. Samplers consisted of XAD-4 resin enclosed in nylon sample bags. Samplers were placed in streams for sampling periods ranging from four to eight days, integrating pollution concentrations during this time. PAH analysis was performed by HPLC, with UV photo diode array, and fluorescence detection. For four streams, bioassessments were performed in addition to PAH-I analysis. No correlation between water quality impairment, as measured by bioassessments, and PAH concentrations was observed. One stream was chosen for a detailed distribution study. Distribution patterns and possible sources were localized to within watersheds of first- and second-order streams.
