This book of stories represents an attempt to touch reality's sensitive surface with words. What unites the fictional characters in these stories is their common confrontation with reality and the need to make decisions. The decisions range from Martin's election to help make posters in "Heart of Golden" to the life/death choice made by Diane in "This Sort of Thing." Whether revealing actions which are impulsive, as in "Tapestry," rationalized, as in "A House to Share," calculated, as in "The Good Cop," or reflective, as in "Deshler," the stories invite the reader to look at the ways in which history, environment and private motives influence the choices that shape our lives.
