The seven stories collected in Thefts feature characters who have lost or are in the process of losing things that are dear to them. From Cassandra in "Something Better Underneath", who has already lost her mother and grandfather, to Gus and Norman in "Clock Puzzle", who face the debilitating losses of old age, to Devron in "Lollipop Girl", who only fears the loss of his girlfriend, all the characters here are focused on what has slipped, or might be slipping, away. While some seem capable of dealing with their losses and moving on, like the mother in "Thefts" or Cassandra in "[No Title Yet)", most, like Elise in "What He's Getting", Devron in "Lollipop Girl", or Sapphire in "Farm Animals", seem stuck, stagnant, unable to progress beyond the challenges they face and the mistakes they have made.
