The success and sustainability of museums in the Arab Middle East
Examining the success and sustainability of museums in the Arab Middle East post-September 11th, the analysis focuses on why the Middle East selected museums to establish or improve their soft power, to spur urban regeneration, and to diversify their economies through tourism. In order to make conclusions on the new Middle Eastern museums, this paper discusses what the projects are, and who was involved in them and in the partnerships that developed. It looks at how they were developed and what issues arose in construction. The research is contextualized by analysis of the art market and the impact of the economic or political situation on these projects. The findings are gathered within the context of all the above and through critical analysis, dialogue with experts and personal insights from years of study of the region. The findings conclude that success is determined by three factors: audience, industry and environment.
