The making of a band: Can non-profit principles be applied to a for-profit venture?
When a band forms its members usually assume the management responsibilities. Few musicians have the time or the skills required to manage the band effectively. This thesis poses the question as to whether the theories and principles of non-profit arts management can be applied to local band management. By examining the question, a structure of management can be determined and if applicable, can help guide musicians to more effective self-management. This thesis examines the management of two bands, The Brothers and the Manatees. Each have worked with managers and have found that outside management at this level is too expensive for the results. By looking at the management structure they have since put in place and applying the principles of arts management, it becomes clear as how they can benefit from nonprofit theories and practices.
