The importance of identity and culture in a united Germany
Most Germans and non-Germans today take a physically and politically united Germany for granted. Important differences in culture and identity between East and West Germans exist, but have remained unexamined, yet they have serious implications for Germany. If these differences and issues of identity are dealt with constructively they will mostly disappear over the next few generations. Both sides must begin to approach one another with an attitude of learning and curiosity rather than judgment and criticism. Only if the East German identity is accepted can East Germans adjust fully to the different West German system. But by ignoring the differences in culture and identity, Germany will become home to two different nations in conflict. The path Germans chose will have important implications for Germany's growth and for the development of the European Union.
