The human right to peace: Why such a right should be recognized
The future of human rights rests on the recognition of the right to peace by state governments. Recognizing a right to peace is more important today than ever with an ongoing war on terrorism. Not only is the right to peace interdependent with the other essential human rights, but also it is a prerequisite to the fulfillment of human rights. Without the recognition of a right to peace, there can be no safeguards to guarantee future generations human rights or a world where suffering is unknown. By recognizing a right to peace states will be able to fulfill the purpose of the United Nations (UN) by working to create a "secure and peaceful world". However, in doing so, international political theory will have to be revised to account for a right to peace. This paper will address these issues and the challenges that the recognition of a right to peace poses for the international community.
