The human dynamics of implementing an automated office in a small business
Implementing an automated office in a small business involves more than installing a microcomputer and providing training for the office personnel. In order to be successful and achieve the goals prompted by the move to automation, particular attention must be paid to the human dynamics that occur during the office automation implementation. The office workers and supervisors will experience changes in work duties, roles, status, and prestige, which if not handled properly, could result in an unsuccessful automation. Improper management of these changes could cause interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts to the work environment. This thesis evaluates these human dynamics as they relate to the success of automating a small business office. Three case studies for using an office automation form the basis of this study. Each of the case studies evidences some level of success. Recommendations are made based on an analysis of these case studies on how to approach handling the human dynamics of an office automation implementation to get a better chance at being successful.
