The golden age of the classical guitar: Trios in combination with other instruments, 1760-1850
Information on guitar trios of this particular period is cant at best. What meager data is stated in one secondary source is simply repeated and not elaborated upon in many others. Of the secondary sources (periodicals, dissertations, books), Die Guitarre and Der Guitarrefreund, German periodicals published during the first half of the twentieth century, are the most prolific. Unfortunately, the only available copies in North America are located at the Lincoln Center Museum in New York City, and these are incomplete. Lincoln Center does not keep Der Guitarrefreund past 1917, and this is not made clear in the Union List of Serials. Koczirz's article, "Die Wiener Gitarristik von Giuliani" found in Die Guitarre (vol. 2, 1920) has virtually all of its twenty pages torn out!; To assess properly the guitar's role in ensemble music of the early nineteenth century, researching facsimiles of primary sources is necessary. Along with the music, treatises by Ferandiere, Sor, and Berlioz are of great importance, and are available at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
