The purpose of this exploratory study was to document the baccalaureate origins of Latino doctorates in science and engineering (S&E), and create institutional profiles for the institutions responsible for the highest production of future S&E doctorates. The study consisted of a quantitative phase and a descriptive phase. Individual records from the Doctorate Records File from 1983--97 were analyzed to create baseline data for this population and to develop a productivity index of institutions. Based on this productivity index, qualitative methods were used to explore the role that campus environment, recruitment strategies, and retention programs may play in relation to such productivity. An institutional profile was created for each institution studied in the descriptive phase.
