This comprehensive examination of the problematic correlation between aesthetic and ethical values progresses from the most general perspectives of philosophy and religion to culminate within the specific context of the Gaudiya Vaishnava religious tradition. Its chief premise is that a study of this tradition illustrates the potential for both the success and failure of the correlation between these competing values extremely well. Accordingly, it attempts to uncover what contributes to those respective outcomes. Although this analysis especially applies to the religious tradition under consideration, more general lessons derive from it as well.
