The hypothesis of this thesis is that a synthesis of various forms of supplemental or cross training can provide important additional training for dancers. Furthermore, this thesis provides specific ways in which cross training can be utilized by dancers. Cross and supplemental training in dance provide methods of developing flexibility, alignment, and strength that are in addition to what is normally done in technique classes. Many athletes, both amateur and professional, use cross training. It helps reduce injuries by de-emphasizing repetitive stress on any particular body part. It is also beneficial because it can target several key areas of health: cardiovascular, endurance, power, speed, and strength. There has been very little research concerning cross and supplemental training in dance. To study how these methods could apply to dancers, the author worked with small groups of dancers and teachers over a period of several months. The results will form an important component of this thesis and will provide guidelines for future studies.
