The Role of Labor's League for Political Education

The objectives of the American Federation of Labor has been primarily economic. The purpose of the AFL in establishing Labor's League for Political Education in 1947 as to elect office holders sympathetic to the economic objectives of organized labor.This was considered necessary in order to enact, strengthen and retain laws which would encourage free collective bargaining and which would provide direct benefits such as increased social security benefits and unemployment compensation.
