The Republican-Southern Democratic Coalition versus the Fair Deal: A Study of Voting Alignments in the House of Representatives in the Eighty-First Congress

For a number of years close observers of the Congressional scene have watched with considerable interest the informal voting alignment of a coalition of Republicans and Southern Democrats in the House of Representatives. This coalition has appeared to function most effectively on certain types of legislation associated with the New Deal and later the Fair deal program of President Truman.
