The election of 1876, which installed Hayes in the White House, was to be the turning point in this Southern reign of terror. As 1876 approached, it became evident that for the first time since the formation of the Republican Party it would be difficult to elect the party's candidate. The Republican record of post-war days certainly had not been all that could be desired, since both scandals and unemployment, a result of the panic of 1873, stood out strongly against them.
