The Ryukyu Islands extend southwest of Japan proper for about 800 miles and consist of eleven island groups of some 140 islands or islets. The are located on 127° longitude from 25° - 28° north latitude. They are peopled by 936,000 Ryukyuans who are of the same racial origins as the Japanese, but because of the slightly stronger Maylayan strain are inclined to be somewhat darker.
