Stress distribution in materials of construction, whether present in the actual structure or representative of the structure in the form of test specimens, has been the object of many investigations in previous years, both among the mathematicians and engineers. At times, especially when doubt in the mind of the structural designer was manifest in regard to the safety of the structure in question, experts in the fields of physics, geology, and other important sciences were called upon to render opinion, and to offer reasons why or why not the designer was justified in his assumptions.
