The National Museum of Women in the Arts: Case study of a new museum
The National Museum of Women in the Arts opened April 7, 1987, in Washington, D.C. The museum presented an opportunity not only to study the development of a new museum, but to examine the issues and controversy surrounding a museum devoted to women. The purpose of this case study was to determine the need for such a museum and to analyze its development. Interviews with staff and board members, examination of museum documents, and completion of the docent training program provided primary source material. Museum management literature, press coverage, and sources on women in the arts were also consulted. The museum, while very successful in fund-raising and membership, experienced difficulties as it evolved from concept to full operation. A comparison of the museum's first year to the second revealed improvements implemented by the board and management. Strong support by members and donors substantiates a need for the museum.
