The Land Gift Movement vs. Communism
About the middle of the year 1947, the British Parliament passed an enactment partitioning India into two-India and Pakistan, and conferring upon them self government, absolving itself of all responsibilities in the newly created states. It meant a withdrawal of the British political authority from India. Thus India became independent and a free nation on August 15, 1947. As the Congress Party advised by Mahatma Gandhi and led by Mr. Nehru, was the largest single political party, the rule of the newly independent country was handed over to it. But all that glitters is not gold. The Congress Party and the people of India had thought that the dawn of freedom might bring sunshine with it and the trouble would be over. This dream of the common masses did not come true. On the contrary, the things began to take a turn as though for the worse. Two weeks after independence, the harassed, attacked and pursued Hindus and Sikhs of Pakistan began to flee into India. Millions were on the move between September and December 1947. As a result of this long caravan of exodus, one out of every fifty persons in India today is a refugee from Pakistan.
