Having recently quit her job as a public defender in Boston and moved to Maine with her husband, Joe, Marie Davidson is having second thoughts about staying home with her adopted son, Mark. And about motherhood in general. Mark suffers from a morbid fear of loss, and as Marie struggles to convince him that the world is safer than he thinks, she loses her own sense of security--even her sense of what is "real" when she becomes haunted by another mother who gave away her child. The novel explores the dark side of motherhood and the oxymoronic world of young children, confounding in their fragile resilience and their savage innocence.
