At midnight on May 14, 1948, the State of Israel came into existence following a decision of the United Nations on November 29, 1947, which called for the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine into a Jewish and Arab State. The United Nations' resolution has however not been carried out according to the proposed partition plan.
