In the latter half of the eighteenth century, Great Britain was a nation sorely beset with the ills attending the advent of industrialism; great masses of people migrated from rural areas into cities in search of a means of living no longer available on the "enclosed" pasture nor in the over-populated rural areas. The economic revolution of industrialism resulted in social chaos. Social dislocation greatly raised the incidence of poverty, crime, and immorality.
