The original fiction and poetry in this collection reflects a variety of thematic and literary concerns. The poems, which are in both free and formal verse, address themes of time, change, love, and identity. The short story, "Moves We Could Never Have Imagined," addresses the theme of love and communication in the context of marriage. The remaining stories, "A New England Schoolteacher," "Etty's," and "Mutual Life & Casualty," take place in the fictional town of Oakham, Connecticut during the early 1970s. Underlying the stories are the social changes of the times and the effect of those changes on members of the Oakham community.
