The Election
In this political satire/romantic comedy, Meredith Mulligan, the wife of a congressman, wants out of the whole political game. She is tired of her role as the supportive, unopinionated wife, and can't stand the lonely nights, stupid reporters, and her husband's progressively compromised principles. Her husband Ben loves his job, and won't give it up unless he loses an election. She decides that the only way she can get what she wants is to work secretly to get her husband's opponent elected. Against the backdrop of political campaigning in the 1990s, Mr. and Mrs. Mulligan compete against each other both in the election and for control of the marriage. Themes of privacy, the relationship between love and politics, gender roles, and the effect that television and the media have on all of these, all become intertwined in the story.
