The Effects of Private and Other Forms of Ownership on the American Theatre

When one speaks of the American theatre, the institution referred to includes only that part of the entertainment industry which is confined to the professional legitimate stage. Strictly speaking, the numerous college, university, and community theatres are not covered in the term. A legitimate theatre is that which is composed of living players as contrasted to the movie theatre which presents only their shadows.
