The Educational Contributions of the United States Commissioners of Education, 1867-1928
The purpose of this study is to trace the educational contributions of the former United States Commissioners of Education. The influence of these men has done much to shape the national development of education at times when our educational system needed wise guidance in its rapid growth to meet the constantly increasing complexity of American life. The need for collecting information concerning the United States Commissioners of Education has been given some attention by educational writers from time to time; however, up to the present no complete study of the leadership of this group of men has been available. In view of the fact that considerable first-hand information is yet obtainable, not only in the writings of these officials but through those who knew them personally, an attempt has been made to gather data from these valuable sources. An attempt has been made to include in the footnotes and the bibliography, references to all sources drawn from in the preparation of this study.
