The Economics of the Retirement Test under the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Program

A basic purpose of old-age and survivors insurance (OASI), which comes under the provisions of the Social Security Act, is replacement of earnings lost through retirement or death of the insured worker. Monthly benefits are provided for workers and their families. A beneficiary must, however, meet a "retirement" requirement as a condition of eligibility for benefits.
