There is much variation in opinions, both lay and professional, as to the likelihood of extended use of atomic energy in war or peace. But irrespective of the accuracy of any specific speculation as to future uses, the total funds appropriated to the atomic energy program through June 30, 1953, amounted to $12.1 billion, and the Atomic Energy Commission reported an equity as of that same date of $7.7 billion not including inventories of source and fissionable materials and weapons components.
