The Civil War was one of the most significant events in the history of the United States. Few intellectuals of the North had believed that Civil War would have been the outcome of the growing sectional differences. Nevertheless, when war became a reality it was accepted by the majority of the leaders of learning as a prerequisite for saving the Union. All aspects of life, including that of the mind, felt the impact of this great conflict.
