The Characterology of Eduard Spranger as a Contribution to a Philosophy of Education

The thesis project originally approved was a translation, with critical comment, of Eduard Spranger's Lebensformen, a work which no English or American publisher had undertaken to introduce to the English-speaking public. It was discovered, however, that an English translation made by Mr. Paul J.W. Pigors of Harvard University had been published in Germany under the title Types of Men. Accordingly the plan of the present study was changed in favor of a critique of Spranger's basic teachings, to be made from the specific point of view indicated in the title, with especial reference to the educational needs of contemporary America.
