These thirty-two of my poems that comprise The Attic Door span nearly fifty years. Sixteen of them were written within the past three years. Nine were written within the past eight years; others before that. They are grouped by subject: Snowlight, Pausing in Flight, and The Attic Door. A fourth category, Translations, contains eleven poems by Eleni Vakalo that are translated from the Greek. While I was in Professor Henry Taylor's translation course, Professor Myra Sklarew recommended to me Ms. Vakalo's collection of poems, Geneologia tou kosmou, which includes portraits of her immediate ancestors. My translations of Ms. Vakalo's poems are included here. Ghosts from the past inhabit the poems in The Attic Door. The collection reflects memories of grief, loss, and survival. Yet the poems leave doors ajar into unexplored rooms.
