The characters in these eight stories find that living in the real world requires bold acts of the imagination. A young woman's obsession with a mysterious stranger has unforeseen aftershocks. A physics teacher sorts through truths and lies as an AIDS survivor. Two old friends must part--or is their loss a failure of vision? The son of a housepainter finds himself recreating his father as he wishes him to be. And when an anthropologist learns that her lover may be pregnant without benefit of sperm, the scientist must find a way to live with the possibility of miracles. These and other stories suggest that what we are may be limited only by what we can conceive.
