This thesis will explore the requirements for the creation and survival of a small, professional theater company. The contention of this thesis is that the survival of a small theater requires: (1) energetic leadership, (2) strong management skills, (3) a dedicated core group, (4) adequate funds to cover potential shortfalls, (5) a clear mission or purpose and (6) a performance/rehearsal space. Special focus is placed on the history of small theatres in D.C. with particular attention to Horizons Theatre, Moving Target Theatre, Studio Theatre and Woolly Mammoth Theatre.
