Surfacing is a first-person narrative written about recovering from anorexia nervosa that investigates the connection between early childhood sexual abuse and rape and the onset of an eating disorder. Rather than focus on the early and middle stages of the disorder, the narrative focuses on the decision to recover and the subsequent two years to break free of the disorder. Explores identity in relation to illness, what must be given up in the process of recovery, and what it means to recover from and move beyond an eating disorder. Examines the long-term repercussions of eating disorders, both in terms of physical and emotional health, and questions the concept of healing both physically and emotionally.
