Humor = suffering. I intend to show that anytime anyone ever laughs at anything, suffering is present. Whether in the content of the joke or through its form, there are painful elements in all humor. I will prove this using Kurt Vonnegut as an intellectual sanctuary due to his literary focus on humor. I will briefly visit the dominant theories of why we laugh and show how each contains elements of suffering. By categorizing humor based on its vehicles' techniques, I will show how physical (Slapstick), linguistic (Wordplay), ideational (Absurdism) and existential (Black) humor all contain suffering.
