The following pages present a short survey of State opposition to the Federal Government from 1798 to 1832. The principal instances of state defiance have been mentioned, with especial emphasis upon the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, the New England developments leading to the Hartford Convention and South Carolina's Nullification Ordinance. Other instances of state resistance have been touched on for purposes of continuity and comparison, but the above have received greater attention due to their especial historic significance and importance.
