Some administrative aspects of a hobby program for an American elementary school

Upon consulting the dictionary we find that a hobby is "something in which one takes absorbing interest." A survey of the literature of hobbies and hobbyists leads one to deduce a rough categorization of the hobbyists into the following types: the collectors, the doers, and the scholars. The types are overlapping, but each has its special characteristics. The "collectors" seem to be born with an instinctive passion for assembling things, and in the progressive stages of their hobbying, the passion becomes organizational. The "doers" seem possessed of a creative, manipulative impulse which impells them to activity. Their hobbies progress artistically towards the idealization of beauty and form. The "scholars" seek truth and understanding. Their interests are computative, intellectual, and abstract. The purpose of this thesis is to review the relationships and interrelationships of curricular and administrative problems to the objective of furthering and improving these hobby types.
