The determinants of child raising are a complex mixture of cultural and individual elements, of general group standards and the specific personalities of the family members. In this study the focus narrows on one variable, the consequences of sub-group membership on child raising. As such, the crucial reaction of the individual child in a specific family situation or the life history of the parents will be used only incidentally to illustrate broader patterns. Throughout, the emphasis will be on the question, what consequences do socio-economic status and race have for child training?
