STUDIES ON VEGETABLE OIL DEODORIZER DISTILLATES WITH RESPECT TO LIPID AND PESTICIDE CONTENT

Three samples of different types of deodorizer distillates were obtained from three different sections of the country. The distillates varied as to origin, e.g., soybean, cottonseed, etc. The samples were analyzed for fatty acid, sterol, tocopherol, and pesticide content. The fatty acids constituted from 69.5 to 86.9% of the samples and the tocopherols ranged from 2.4 to 5.6%. Pesticides were found in every sample. One sample contained 1.0 ppm of DDT while another sample yielded 10.5 ppm of a possible degradation product of DDT, namely dichlorobenzophenone. The samples were also examined for cyclic and noncyclic fatty acid dimers and none were detected. The sterol analysis revealed the usual plant sterols (0.1 to 11.2%) but cholesterol was also found in varying amounts (0.1 to 1.1%) depending on the origin of the distillate.
